Staying Trendy and Sustainable for SS23, is it possible?
There is nothing better than re-vamping your wardrobe for the upcoming season. But how can we stay on top of trends whilst still minimising the environmental effect, we have a few ideas for you…
The trends for the upcoming SS23 season could not be on more opposite ends of the spectrum.
From elevated basics to the revival of the noughties and landing on dopamine dressing, we can expect a summer of bright shades and short skirts. But how can we keep up with these trends and not play into throwaway fashion, which we all know is not the most sustainable practice.
The 2000s revival
Hoarders, alas, your efforts have paid off. If you are anything like me, and cannot throw out old clothes, just in the off chance you might need them again, you’re in for a treat. The Spring/Summer 23 trends have officially entered the streets and we are so excited to see the renewal of some of the best 2000’s trends but with a 2023 twist.
We all remember the classic 2000’s trends, miniskirts, low rise, Uggs, tracksuits, acid wash, the absolute classics, Paris Hilton in her prime. Well, they have come back around and are honestly quite hard to ignore. Miniskirts can be seen in all forms, whether that is the classic denim, or a bright pleated, or even the current shock piece, the Diesel belt skirt as seen on Selling Sunset (look it up, it is wild).

Thankfully, we’re not welcoming back the low low rise with open arms. Trousers that show only a slight bit more of midriff, compared to the beloved high rise of the 2010’s, a more relaxed look. Keeping on the wave of comfort, the number one shoe trend currently are Uggs. Long gone are the days of the uncomfortable heels and instead we are now blessing our feet with the luxury of what the 2000’s teen celebrities wore on the red carpet, so surely, they are stylish? On the same line, Juicy Couture tracksuits, the epitome of #airportstyle. Lastly, landing on acid wash, the grunge kids have entered. (Bonus points if they were actually jeggings.)
Keeping it circular
With all these trends making a comeback, there are a few annoyed faces around. Mainly of the people who threw out there Uggs when they were no longer stylish instead of using them as slippers. Keeping up with trends is very difficult to do in a sustainable way, but we urge you to take a dive into your wardrobes, what do you have hidden at the back? It is always best to shop your stash before shopping new, and if your stash isn’t doing it then shop someone else’s. Apps like Vinted offer amazing clothes for very cheap and also promote a more circular economy, helping out individuals too rather than a big corporation.
TIP
When searching on apps like Vinted, stay away from terms like 2000 and instead go specific… rara skirt, velour, bedazzled. It will bring up genuine clothes from the time that people are selling rather than curated clothes for the trend that are double the price.
If you are feeling more creative you can also try your hand at some DIY. Acid wash is easily done at home, with a quick Google search hundreds of tutorials are available to follow. Skirts can always be cut and re-hemmed to make them shorter, as well as old joggers bedazzled.
Overall, throughout the new years and seasons we always see trends circle back, and we can use this knowledge to our advantage.Look elsewhere for new/old clothes, if it was in trend before then it means that someone out there still has that Ed Hardy cap, they want rid of. And the clothes you want rid of? Why not give them a new lease of life by fixing them up, making them new again, or even renting them out?
